At Gunter Primary School, we believe that every day in school truly matters. Regular attendance is one of the most important ways you can support your child’s learning, wellbeing and future success. Each lesson builds on previous learning, so when children miss school, even for short periods, it can be difficult for them to catch up.
At Gunter Primary School, we place a strong focus on good attendance because we know the positive impact it has on children’s progress and confidence. When children attend school regularly, they develop secure routines, build strong friendships, and form positive relationships with staff. They feel more settled, more confident in class, and more willing to take part in new challenges and opportunities.
Poor attendance can affect much more than academic progress. Children may miss important reading, writing and maths learning, as well as exciting experiences such as trips, themed days and special events. Over time, frequent absence can lead to gaps in learning and may affect a child’s confidence and sense of belonging.
We understand that there will be times when children are genuinely unwell and need to stay at home. However, wherever possible, we encourage families to make attendance a priority and to arrange appointments and holidays outside of term time.
By working together, families and school staff can ensure that every child at Gunter Primary School has the best possible chance to achieve their full potential. Every day counts, and together we can help our children grow, succeed and enjoy their time at school.
Check this chart to see how your child’s attendance compares:
Attendance during one school year | equals this number of days absent | which is approximately this many weeks absent | which means this number of lessons missed |
90% | 19 days | 4 weeks | 100 lessons |
80% | 38 days | 8 weeks | 200 lessons |
70% | 57 days | 11.5 weeks | 290 lessons |
Frequent absence or arriving late can add up to a considerable amount of lost learning and can seriously disadvantage your child in adult life.
