Intent:
Geography inspires children’s curiosity about the world in which they live, developing a sense of place and be able to explore similarities and differences between their country and the wider world. Developing an understanding of the links between human and physical geography, as well as creating analytical minds. Our aim is to develop pupils to become global citizens and recognise the positive and negative effects they can have on their planet. These link with our Gunter Values: Finding out and Exploring, understanding others, Spirituality and creativity and critical thinking.
Implementation:
Children are taught Geography discretely each week. Where links can be made with other curriculum areas and topics they are, in order to develop a wide breadth of knowledge and apply their knowledge to many different situations. Children are taught to develop not only their substantive skills( information) but also the disciplinary knowledge (skills) to make them think like a geographer. To embed understanding of key themes, there are many opportunities to develop their practical skills of geography during fieldwork and educational visits.
There are many extra opportunities for children to develop their geographical skills including: local and global study weeks, Science week, a range of educational visits, enrichment after school club or being part of the Eco- crew.
