Music Subject Lead – Miss Collins
Our Music Vision
Our music teaching aims to provide all children with a love of music, inspiring them to develop a lifelong love of the subject and opportunities it can create. We want children to have opportunities to express themselves, gain a sense of achievement and explore the key aspects of music such as composition, singing and appreciation.
Within school, we follow the National Curriculum for Music. We use the Charanga music scheme to support teaching and learning. Within each year group, we cover a unit of music over each half term. Within the units, children have the opportunity to listen to and appraise a range of music, linked to the unit. They learning to sing songs, find the pulse, add in instruments, improvise and also compose. We explore the elements of music with all of our units – pitch, tempo, timbre, duration, dynamics, texture and structure. Children are also introduced to notation within their lessons.
Additional opportunities
We have additional opportunities for music within our school. In year 4, all children have an hour a week ukulele lesson. This is a special opportunity for all children to experience learning an instrument together and see some of the opportunities that this offers. Children then have the opportunity to continue their learning into year 5 and 6 by taking guitar lessons. We use opportunities during assemblies to sing together as a school as well as performing pieces from our music units during our class assemblies. We also have an annual Christmas carol concert at our local church.
