At Gunter Primary School we believe that our School Curriculum should be broad and balanced and underpinned by aims, values and purpose. Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, but there are many other opportunities that make up the wider curriculum. These are designed to inspire and challenge all children, prepare them for the future and aid them in their strive for excellence.
We believe passionately in developing the whole person and giving our children ownership of their learning. Our curriculum is rich with first-hand purposeful experiences and is designed to be flexible and responsive to individual needs and interests. We support our children in becoming ‘aspirational’ – aiming high – in order to make the most of their learning opportunities and we believe in an active partnership between school, pupil and home.
Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum 2014. Cross-curricular themes are developed where links enhance & expand the children’s studies. The principal subjects for each theme are shown, though other subjects will often be included especially English & mathematics – these opportunities are detailed in our full syllabus.
Key stage 2 classes have a science theme every half term. History / geography are covered in alternate half-terms. Art/d.t is often applied to the themes, with additional time for developing skills / other work, (e.g. Christmas). Music, foreign language and PE have their own independent schemes of work. Religious Education is described in the Birmingham LA ‘Agreed Syllabus’.
If required the themes may be completed at different times to those stated above - occasionally themes may change when there is advantage to do so, (e.g. when the Olympic Games occur).
